Queensgate

The 8th Queensgate race took place on Saturday in East Cowes. First run in 2012 to raise funds for an outdoor learning facility it has become a firm favourite amongst the running community.

With 2 distances on offer, (a 10 mile and a 5k), the event appeals to all ages and all abilities.

The 10 mile course has unprecedented access to the private estates of Osborne House and Barton Manor before taking the runners out to Wootton. They returned to East Cowes via the dreaded Brocks Copse and Alverstone Road before crossing at The Forge passing Whippingham Church and then a lovely downhill back to the school.

In the 10 mile Stuart Backhouse made it his 3rd consecutive win as he tore up the hilly route in less than 65 minutes, taking a minute off last years time.

Steve Apsey returned to the school in a fantastic 3rd place

“I think it’s my 4th or 5th time doing this run. I love the course”

Long standing member and club legend Dave Cass came home in 11th with Ian Dyer not too far behind in 13th.

Sarah Ward continued her fantastic form to cross the line 3rd lady and 15th overall.

Dave Wilcock was home next with his usual big smile on his face. Fiona Attwood was back 5 minutes later taking a whopping 6 minutes off her time last year with Carolyn Littleton completing the team with her infectious enthusiasm.

In the 5k there was a clean sweep of the podium with Simon Pilcher, David Blake and Matt Fletcher taking the honours. Karen Phillips was next home to take 6th lady, a perfect little leg loosener before next weeks IOW marathon. Tanya Clifford and Caroline Curliss ran the 3 miles together.

“It was a very scenic route with a killer hill, It had a good vibe and is great for the school…. oh and great tea and cakes at the end” said Matt Fletcher
