Formerly the royal hunting grounds of King John, the last 10 years have seen some major restoration work resulting in the area now being recognised as a wildlife site of national importance.<\/p>\n<p>In it&#8217;s 5th year now the Ox races have evolved. They are now largely based around the 10k circuit used for the light\/dark races, runners wanting to compete at distance could either take on the 50 miler or the 12 hour challenge (run as many loops as you can)<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/isleofwightroadrunners.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/91FF5007-195B-495F-BAE5-1DE85A5B9732.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3847\" src=\"http:\/\/isleofwightroadrunners.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/91FF5007-195B-495F-BAE5-1DE85A5B9732.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"490\" height=\"349\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Two of our tenacious ultra specialists, Dan Williams and Ian Russell took not the bull, but the Ox by the horns by running just about everything on offer over the course of 2 and a half days.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/isleofwightroadrunners.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/64BEA6DE-49B7-414B-A910-66FE1E4925A6.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3848\" src=\"http:\/\/isleofwightroadrunners.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/64BEA6DE-49B7-414B-A910-66FE1E4925A6.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" srcset=\"http:\/\/isleofwightroadrunners.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/64BEA6DE-49B7-414B-A910-66FE1E4925A6.jpeg 1024w, http:\/\/isleofwightroadrunners.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/64BEA6DE-49B7-414B-A910-66FE1E4925A6-768x576.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Starting on Saturday night they started their monster weekend of running by competing in the \u201cDark Ox\u201d A 10k single lap of the course setting off at sunset. They both got off to a cracking start with Dan coming over the line in 12th and Ian in 13th<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were meant to take the 1st race easy\u201d Ian tells me \u201cbut we both got a bit carried away running 8 minute miles\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Off they went to bed using the onsite camping facilities. Getting themselves a good nights sleep for the main event in the morning- the 50 miler!<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI woke up feeling really good for the 50\u201d said Ian<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/isleofwightroadrunners.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/62078230-8AF6-43CC-A252-940EBBD6A556.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3849\" src=\"http:\/\/isleofwightroadrunners.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/62078230-8AF6-43CC-A252-940EBBD6A556.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"2048\" height=\"1536\" srcset=\"http:\/\/isleofwightroadrunners.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/62078230-8AF6-43CC-A252-940EBBD6A556.png 2048w, http:\/\/isleofwightroadrunners.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/62078230-8AF6-43CC-A252-940EBBD6A556-768x576.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 2048px) 100vw, 2048px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>They both got off to a brilliant start with Dan and Ian clocking the 3rd &amp; 5th fastest laps respectively of the whole competition.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>They had to complete 8 laps to reach the 50 miles, (or 53.6 as it turned out! &#8211; good old White Star Running giving out free miles again!) As if that wasn\u2019t hard enough, there was also 6100ft of elevation to contend with.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/isleofwightroadrunners.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/AFEFC2F2-B42E-4B90-A41A-CC3D25BBC984.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3850\" src=\"http:\/\/isleofwightroadrunners.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/AFEFC2F2-B42E-4B90-A41A-CC3D25BBC984.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2048\" height=\"2048\" srcset=\"http:\/\/isleofwightroadrunners.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/AFEFC2F2-B42E-4B90-A41A-CC3D25BBC984.jpeg 2048w, http:\/\/isleofwightroadrunners.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/AFEFC2F2-B42E-4B90-A41A-CC3D25BBC984-768x768.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 2048px) 100vw, 2048px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI suffered bad tummy cramp between 16 and 26 miles, but it wore off thankfully. I only had 4 laps left by then so I kept going. I chose not to take any rest stops and just kept going. I\u2019m glad I did as I reached the 50 mile mark in a pb time of about 9hrs 30mins\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>But they done it! 53.6 miles each for the day, Dan in 5th place and Ian in 6th. A few beers to celebrate and another night in camp. Not too many though as it was business again the next day.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/isleofwightroadrunners.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/F7318801-150C-43F5-B021-0F32181416D9.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3851\" src=\"http:\/\/isleofwightroadrunners.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/F7318801-150C-43F5-B021-0F32181416D9.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2048\" height=\"2048\" srcset=\"http:\/\/isleofwightroadrunners.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/F7318801-150C-43F5-B021-0F32181416D9.jpeg 2048w, http:\/\/isleofwightroadrunners.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/F7318801-150C-43F5-B021-0F32181416D9-768x768.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 2048px) 100vw, 2048px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Dan was on the startline of the Light Ox bright and early.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/isleofwightroadrunners.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/528502B8-E6E9-4F4B-AAA6-DB12AACA5456.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3919\" src=\"http:\/\/isleofwightroadrunners.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/528502B8-E6E9-4F4B-AAA6-DB12AACA5456.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"666\" height=\"484\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was going to take it steady. In fact I did&#8230;.. for 1 mile&#8230;.. then I got all competitive and started picking people off. I don\u2019t know how the hell I managed to hammer it\u201d he told me \u201cI felt like I was flying!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fly? You could say that! Dan managed to work his way through the field to finish in 6th place.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/isleofwightroadrunners.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/02DBB53C-6204-439C-ABAB-05DA7BCF8560.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3852\" src=\"http:\/\/isleofwightroadrunners.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/02DBB53C-6204-439C-ABAB-05DA7BCF8560.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"633\" height=\"485\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Unbelievably, within an hour, he was back on the startline for the last race of the weekend. This time joined by not only Ian, but also club \u201cnational treasure\u201d Lyn Snow.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/isleofwightroadrunners.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/7BEEA789-5BC4-42AB-9330-32F93D29FA94.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3918\" src=\"http:\/\/isleofwightroadrunners.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/7BEEA789-5BC4-42AB-9330-32F93D29FA94.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"669\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Last but by no means least, the half marathon was still a bit of a beast. 1700ft of elevation and classically White Star overmeasured it was no easy finish to the weekend.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/isleofwightroadrunners.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/8FAA54CF-0E9C-4497-A033-79F9874AF8EE.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3854\" src=\"http:\/\/isleofwightroadrunners.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/8FAA54CF-0E9C-4497-A033-79F9874AF8EE.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"476\" height=\"311\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter Saturday\u2019s race, the half didn\u2019t feel very long at all\u201d said Ian<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/isleofwightroadrunners.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/B6272776-762F-4861-BD94-03B1DFE46578.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3856\" src=\"http:\/\/isleofwightroadrunners.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/B6272776-762F-4861-BD94-03B1DFE46578.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2048\" height=\"2048\" srcset=\"http:\/\/isleofwightroadrunners.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/B6272776-762F-4861-BD94-03B1DFE46578.jpeg 2048w, http:\/\/isleofwightroadrunners.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/B6272776-762F-4861-BD94-03B1DFE46578-768x768.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 2048px) 100vw, 2048px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Dan found the last race surprisingly emotional.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere was a big announcement on the startline that 2 others and I were the top 3 finishers over the previous 3 races\u201d said Dan<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Those completing all 4 races were vying for the pole position in the Ox Epic. An additional set of prizes for the top scorers all weekend. Suddenly everyone knew Dans name and were cheering him on, willing him to complete this amazing challenge and become&#8230; well&#8230; epic.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/isleofwightroadrunners.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/3F6FB69E-6F15-486C-B0EB-1551E6B20BD9.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3855\" src=\"http:\/\/isleofwightroadrunners.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/3F6FB69E-6F15-486C-B0EB-1551E6B20BD9.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2048\" height=\"2048\" srcset=\"http:\/\/isleofwightroadrunners.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/3F6FB69E-6F15-486C-B0EB-1551E6B20BD9.jpeg 2048w, http:\/\/isleofwightroadrunners.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/3F6FB69E-6F15-486C-B0EB-1551E6B20BD9-768x768.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 2048px) 100vw, 2048px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>No super fast times in this last race, hardly a surprise as Ian\u2019s total mileage for the weekend hit close to 74 miles and Dan almost 80. Temperatures were considerably higher than the previous day too, as the sun peeked through and the Mercury was hitting the early 20s.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know how I did it\u201d Dan says \u201cI felt really emotional at the end of the half. I was so pleased with my positions in all the races, despite my tired legs\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His time was quick enough to give him 2nd place overall.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am so chuffed to come 2nd, especially to such a quality runner. Maybe I\u2019ll give up smoking and try and beat him next time\u201d he quips \u201cit just all came together nicely.
